Start with the highest-frequency primitives
Buttons, inputs, typography, and spacing tokens unlock more consistency than a catalog of fifty niche components. Ship those first, document usage with real screenshots from your product, and enforce them in review.
Make contribution cheaper than workarounds
If adding a variant to the system is harder than hardcoding a one-off, the system will rot. Clear ownership, short contribution paths, and visible changelogs keep the library alive.
Treat the design system as product infrastructure—versioned, tested, and tied to brand outcomes—not as a static style guide.
